Club Record!

Posted on: March 4, 2026 by Ian Boyle Share this post
Say “hello” to our latest record breaker Charlie Thornton! Charlie is no stranger to LWAC, having been a member as a junior and competing for the club before starting a family and returning to some seriously fast running within the club.
We’ll be featuring Charlie again soon for yet another 2 recent records she’s broken, having only recently moved from the Senior Women category, to the V35W. She’s also recently claimed a 1st at @greateasternrun HM in 75:17, as well as 2nd at Lincoln 10k in a PB 34:41, and raced in many championship and elite entries, most recently being selected as part of the @pumarunning #Project3 👏
Featuring regularly in Fast Running for her top 10 placings in the @parkrunuk listings, as well as being the previous club record holder for the marathon (you may remember the BBC coverage of her heading for the finish line, all smiles, dishing out high fives to the crowd, whilst running a 2:43 in London a few years ago), Charlie excels with both speed and endurance.
She takes the record from A. Bell, who ran 85:30 at Ackworth, back in 2001! Her record stood for a quarter of a century before being broken, which shows how good a time it was, with Charlie now taking an immense 10 minutes from the aforementioned. How long can Charlie hold this for now?
She told us this about her race day: “The race felt controlled and measured from the gun to the line. Knowing the first four miles were straight into a headwind, I tucked in behind a few guys and let them do the heavy lifting.
Conditions kept things interesting with puddles, mud, and the odd pothole to dodge, so staying sharp was key. I found myself running solo after four miles, but kept myself honest, held an even pace, and stayed composed all the way to the finish.
I didn’t even realise about the record until I was told afterwards, which made it even sweeter. It’s a real honour to achieve that at Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club, especially with the strength and depth of talent we have there. To break the V35 record in both the half marathon and the marathon is something I’m genuinely proud of, particularly when I’m surrounded by so many incredible female athletes at the club who I admire.”
