British Indoor Champs Roundup

Amongst many, Lincoln Wellington AC are known as “an endurance” club, however, as many of you will be aware, that statement isn’t necessarily true. With recent years championships seeing the likes of Kaesi Opara and Georgina Adam fly the flag for Welly in sprinting and middle distance, and a senior medal as a 17-year-old for Mabel Akande 2 years ago, added to Callum Winchester-Wright edged out of the final by only 0.01s to a former Olympic gold medal list anchor, it’s safe to say our shorter, faster distances are covered pretty well too.
Many juniors within the club are also excelling with their speed, including Georgia Marriott, Finley Couser, and Ola Kubiak (ranking #1 in the UK for their age group), there’s plenty to be excited about within these disciplines too.
Couple that with V50M Ray Clayton, V75M John Moore, and V85W Dot Fraser, all breaking club, and some British records of late, the “endurance” tag may start to lessen…
This doesn’t mean we aren’t successful in long distances however, with Abbie Donnelly receiving an invite to the 3000m at this years indoor champs, unfortunately not running due to training for London Marathon. An injured Sophie Bowser (Wallis) ran the outdoor 5000m only 2 years ago and delivered an exceptional performance.
Making her debut at this years championships (off the back of illness) was none other than 17-year-old superstar Mollie Grant, in her favoured distance, the 800m. Mollie had a great week, confirming her signature to Blue Carpet Track & Field management, before lining up in the lane inside of Olympic champion, Keely Hodgkinson.
Mollie ran a brilliant 2:09, sticking with the chasing pack the whole way, with the indoors being much different to the outdoor track, where she boasts 2:04.
Callum Winchester-Wright unfortunately didn’t make the final of the 60m after progressing well from his heat, in what was a very competitive semi-final. Mabel Akande won both her heat and semi comfortably, another medal looked possible in the final…unfortunately she pulled up at the end of the semi and was advised by UKA medical team not the run the final after suffering a hamstring tear.
