Training Groups

Lincoln Wellington has a number of training groups aimed to meet the needs of individuals based on their ability and aspirations. We also have teams in a wide range of competitions, from young athletes through senior track and field to road running.

Road Runners

Who for? The Road Runners welcome new members from complete beginners to seasoned athletes. We vary in age from teenagers to old age pensioners. We enter a variety of races from 5k to marathon, but welcome fun runners who do not intend to race but who wish to improve. So if you are looking to improve your Personal Best (PB) or to keep fit we can help you.

When we meet? We meet on a club nights, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and hit the road about 6.30pm. If you are new to the club and want to join us please come down about 6.15pm and ask for the road runners section. We normally form 3-4 running groups of slow, medium, to fast and run 30-60+ minutes. On a Sunday mornings some of our members meet for a long run (10-15+ miles). Feel free to come down and try us out!

Where we meet? We always start from the Club Hub at Yarborough Leisure Centre. We then hit the historic streets of Lincoln utilising the hills and countryside to keep our runs varied.

Track Middle Distance and Endurance Runners

Who for? Many of our road runners progress into our track group which is aimed at the more advanced and experienced middle and long distance runners. This group target anything from 800 metres to marathon. Sessions tend to be harder and help those wanting to break the PBs.

When we meet? Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm. We usually start off with a 30 minute warm up including a 2-mile loop, some drills and strides, before the session starts at 7pm. Sessions vary from 30 minutes to over 1 hour.

Where we meet? Most of our sessions are on the Yarborough Leisure Centre Athletics Track, however, we hit the road or grass during to summer to get some hills or mix up our training mainly during the summer months.

Volunteer

Have you ever wondered how Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club is run?

We are a huge club, catering for all ability levels, offering advice and training, team events and road races and many other things besides.

Well, you probably knew this before. But are you aware that every single activity is organised and managed by volunteers – people who work, have families and don’t spend the whole day in running shoes (although, ok, some do).

Why do they do it?

From our Club Membership Questionnaire 2017, our volunteers are motivated because:

  • They are passionate about track and field and/or running
  • They want to give something back to a club that has offered them a lot
  • They want to help others to enjoy running as much as they do.

“Volunteering at LWAC is easy and rewarding. I think it is beneficial to volunteer and help the community, especially if it is in something you enjoy .” – LWAC volunteer, Club Membership Questionnaire 2017

What can I do?

There are a lot of opportunities for you to get involved. You don’t need any specific skills or background – just come along and join the others.

Marshalling and supporting runners at races: Give directions to runners and hand out water at our high profile races such as the 5k series.

Pacing at club runs: Lead groups of runners and help new runners to find the right group

Leading the Beginners Group: Make sure that nobody gets lost, motivate beginners, and advise on running-related questions.

Driving/supporting/organising team events: Run and volunteer – support, drive, feed, entertain the other runners. A great weekend out, even if you don’t want to run.

Joining the Committee: Elections take place at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) every Spring.

Website management & social media: Tasks include website maintenance, social media, events scheduling, results management, race reports etc.

Officiating at track & field meetings: From Assistant Official to Level 5 International Level, help the club by officiating at home and away club events locally and nationally.

Fundraising: Working with local partners, businesses, accessing relevant funding and grant streams to help the club grow and become more sustainable.

Coaching at track sessions: From Running Fitness Leaders to high end technical coaches supporting our athletes grow and develop.
